The Lorica of Saint Patrick
I arise today
in a mighty strength:
invoking the Trinity,
believing the three-ness,
confessing the one-ness
of the Creator of Creation.
I arise today
in the might of Christ's birth and baptism,
in the might of his crucifixion and burial,
in the might of his resurrection and ascension,
in the might of his coming judgement
of the living and the dead.
I arise to-day
in the mighty love of Cherubim,
in the obedience of angels and the service of archangels,
in the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
in the prayers of patriarchs and the watchwords of prophets,
in the preaching of apostles and the faith of confessors,
in the innocence of virgins and the deeds of the righteous.
I arise today
in the might of heaven,
in the brightness of sun and the radiance of moon,
in the splendour of fire and the speed of lightning,
in the swiftness of wind and the depths of the sea,
in the stability of earth and the firmness of rock.
I arise today
God's might piloting, God's wisdom guiding,
God's eye seeing, God's ear hearing,
God's word speaking,
God's hand guarding, God's path leading,
God's shield protecting,
God's hosts saving from snares of the enemy,
from allurements of vices and inclinations of nature,
from all who wish me ill, afar and anear,
alone or in a multitude.
I invoke all these strengths between me and all evil,
against every cruel and merciless power
that threatens my body and soul,
against incantations of false prophets,
against pagan laws and heretical doctrines,
against the deceit of idolatry,
against spells of witches, smiths and wizards,
against all knowledge that endangers my soul.
Christ shield me today
against poison, against burning,
against drowning, against wounding,
so that reward may come in abundance.
Christ with me,
Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ where I lie down,
Christ where I sit,
Christ where I arise.
Christ in the hearts of all who think of me,
Christ in the mouths of all who speak of me,
Christ in the eyes of all who see me,
Christ in the ears of all who hear me.
I arise today
in a mighty strength:
invoking the Trinity,
believing the three-ness,
confessing the one-ness
of the Creator of Creation.
Salvation is from the Lord.
Salvation is from the Lord.
Christ is salvation.
May your salvation, O Lord, be ever with us.
Amen.
